Robert MacKay

Robert Mackay (b.1973) completed a degree in Geology and Music at Keele University in 1995, studying electroacoustic composition there with Michael Vaughan. Currently he is lecturer in Creative Music Technology for the University of Hull and is studying for a PhD in musical composition at the University of Wales, Bangor under the supervision of Andrew Lewis.

His work has gained international recognition in the form of prizes and mentions; Bourges ‘Synthése’ Festival (1997 and 2001), EAR99 from Hungarian Radio in 1999. His pieces have been performed across Europe and the UK (including performances on BBC Radio 3) as well as America, Australia and New Zealand.

As well as composing in various genres, he is an actor, singer and instrumentalist. He has performed in productions all over the UK, and has made several Radio and Television appearances. He plays and writes in a number of bands and ensembles, including the Welsh Hip-Hop collective ‘Tystion’ and recently collaborated with John Cale (of the Velvet Underground) in the film ‘A Beautiful Mistake’ with them. They have also played on BBC Radio 1 and supported international acts, including PJ Harvey.

He is a founding member of the Bangor New Music Festival committee and is currently the treasurer.

Awards and recognition:

  • Augustine's Message. Pre-selected for 'Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Competition, 2001'.

  • Voicewind. Won Special Prize in the 'EAR99 Competition of the HEAR Studio (Hungarian Radio), 1999'.

  • Sea Pictures. Won Residency Prize from 'Bourges International Electroacoustic Music Competition, 1997'. For this prize I travelled to Bratislava in August 1998 to compose in the experimental music studio of Slovak Radio.

  • University of Wales, Bangor. Travel Grant, Michigan 1998.

  • University of Wales, Bangor. Research Scholarship, 1997 - 1999.

  • Sea Pictures and Environs. Short-listed for SPNM season, 1997 - 2000.

  • Keele University. Music Department Prize for outstanding commitment to performance, 1993.
