GARETH PEREDUR CHURCHILL was born in 1980, Gareth’s family come from Griffithstown (Pontypool). Gareth studied composition in London with Rhian Samuel at City University and oboe / cor anglais with Helena Gaunt at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. After graduating Gareth returned to Wales for postgraduate study completing an Mmus in composition with Lynne Plowman at Cardiff University. He is currently half way through his PhD in composition (supervised by Anthony Powers) in Cardiff. Whilst in London the piano score ‘Annwn’ was twice performed by Helen Reid in the Purcell Rooms during the Young Composers Symposium in the 2002 Park Lane Groups Young Artists Series. Since returning to Wales Gareth has had commissions from the Scottish Clarinet Quartet, Niki Long and Ensemble Spirito. ‘Slithy Toves’ for solo bass clarinet was premiered and later recorded in Glasgow by Becky Smith (Scottish Clarinet quartet / Ensemble Symposia). ‘Gorsedd Pont-y-pwl’ (first heard at musicfest Aberystwyth) was later programmed by the PM Ensemble and the Cardiff University Contemporary music Group who performed the work at RWCMD and Cardiff University / Wales Millennium Centre respectively. Gareth received the 2005 Welsh Livery Guild Music Award and his song cycle ‘Blodeugerdd’ has been programmed for premiere in Cardiff University’s 2006 professional concert series by Jeremy Huw Williams and Nigel Foster. Current projects include a viola sonata ‘Cromlech’ for Phillip Heyman and a first string quartet ‘Ystwyth’.
