GARETH
PEREDUR CHURCHILL was born in 1980, Gareth’s family come from
Griffithstown (Pontypool). Gareth studied composition in London with
Rhian Samuel at City University and oboe / cor anglais with Helena Gaunt
at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. After graduating Gareth
returned to Wales for postgraduate study completing an Mmus in
composition with Lynne Plowman at Cardiff University. He is currently
half way through his PhD in composition (supervised by Anthony Powers)
in Cardiff. Whilst in London the piano score ‘Annwn’ was twice
performed by Helen Reid in the Purcell Rooms during the Young Composers
Symposium in the 2002 Park Lane Groups Young Artists Series. Since
returning to Wales Gareth has had commissions from the Scottish Clarinet
Quartet, Niki Long and Ensemble Spirito. ‘Slithy Toves’ for solo
bass clarinet was premiered and later recorded in Glasgow by Becky Smith
(Scottish Clarinet quartet / Ensemble Symposia). ‘Gorsedd Pont-y-pwl’
(first heard at musicfest Aberystwyth) was later programmed by the PM
Ensemble and the Cardiff University Contemporary music Group who
performed the work at RWCMD and Cardiff University / Wales Millennium
Centre respectively. Gareth received the 2005 Welsh Livery Guild Music
Award and his song cycle ‘Blodeugerdd’ has been programmed for
premiere in Cardiff University’s 2006 professional concert series by
Jeremy Huw Williams and Nigel Foster. Current projects include a viola
sonata ‘Cromlech’ for Phillip Heyman and a first string quartet ‘Ystwyth’. List of works:
