Brian
Noyes was born in Cardiff, and first began his music studies at
The Welsh College of Music and Drama, where he studied classical guitar.
His interest in composition was fostered there, by lessons with Dr David
Wynne, with whom he continued whilst he completed his undergraduate degree
at University College, Cardiff. He then attended Goldsmiths' College,
London, obtaining his masters degree in composition. It was during his
time there that he received the first performances of his work, at the ICA,
London, and locally in South Wales. At various times during his studies,
he attended summer music schools, at Dartington when Sir Peter Maxwell
Davies taught composition there, and also the Aldeburgh School of Advanced
Musical Studies for composition workshops under Sir Harrison Birtwistle.
He has had his music performed by ensembles such as Singcircle, Lontano,
Music Projects London, and the Hilliard Ensemble, both locally in South
Wales, and in other parts of Britain, as well as by other performers. He
established and directed the contemporary music ensemble Network during
the 1980s, and has also conducted other choirs and orchestras. At various
times he has been active in the contemporary musical life of the area,
through his association with the Guild for the Promotion of Welsh Music,
the Vale of Glamorgan Festival, Music Theatre Wales, etc.. He is currently
Director of Music at the United World College of the Atlantic.
